I'm not an outwardly emotional guy. Very few authors know how to tug on my heartstrings. In fact, for the longest time, I can only think of Pat Conroy of having that effect on me. Book after book, Pat Conroy's words could cut you to ribbons with one sentence and cause you to smile with another. And now another author is causing those same outpouring of emotions each book. This is my third Charles Martin book. After loving The Mountain Between Us and Long Way Gone, I am pleased to say that Send Down The Rain is another extraordinary work of Charles Martin. Like Conroy, Charles Martin creates rich and memorable characters that share similarities in previous books. His lead male characters always have a strong morale fortitude while dealing with past struggles that I find captivating. He also provides messages of forgiveness and hope that will resonate with a reader long after the book's final page. You could highlight a third of the book with its memorable and profound passages. I loved the relationships of Joseph and how they affect him throughout the book. Some books are predictable from beginning to end; however, Send Down The Rain takes us on a carnival ride from North Carolina to Florida to California to Vietnam and while I guessed some of it, there were so many surprises of where this book took me. You'll find yourself rooting for Joseph and others while fighting back emotions. I can't wait to devour my next Charles Martin book. Let me know if you have any suggestions on which one to read next!
