5 Stars Out Of 5!
“I’ve found people wear a lot of masks to cover their unsavory motives—my job is to find them.”
“If there is a God, why would he allow such bone-chilling crimes against humanity?”
“There is a fine line between intuition and paranoia, cynicism and realism. A good detective keeps a balance between them. People are rarely what they appear to be, but not all suspects are criminals.”
I love finding a new detective series! And I have found a good one in Book 1 of Dark Motives by Zanne Marie Dyer. She has created an amazing lead character in Jet (Jethro) Wholeman. He is a flawed character that is devoted to his job, trying to find the killer of a young girl while his own marriage is falling apart. Dyer gives us a realistic picture of the stresses of work and home, especially when one is a Christian and the other is not. It was a joy to read about Jet’s journey.
One thing that really surprised me was that this is a debut novel. It reads like a seasoned writer has penned this and it has all the things I love in a suspenseful novel: a detective who is far from perfect, great mystery and suspense, gritty realism and dialogue, an awesome Florida setting, enjoyable secondary characters, and best of all, a message of hope and faith in Jesus. It is a book that will appeal to both men and women. As a male Christian reader, it is difficult to find books like this one. And she perfectly sets up for a second book which I can’t wait to devour!
